Protection

The human skin develops natural defences against the damaging effects of the sun. It darkens over time, it partially thickens and a repair mechanism can mend damages inside cells.

However, these natural mechanisms take time to develop and are limited in scope, especially in sun sensitive skin such as skin type I and II.

Furthermore, all skin types are particularly at risk

- in Spring and early Summer, when natural defences did not
have time to develop
- in extreme exposures such as by sea, in the snow, on high
mountains and in tropical areas, where sun intensity is very
high

Therefore, from a medical point of view, the skin needs additional protection by following simple rules of behaviour and using an appropriate sun protectant, adapted to each skin type.

The photo protective effect of a sunscreen is indicated by the Sun Protective Factor (SPF). It reflects the degree of protection from UVB rays:

	SPF =	Time to develop sunburn WITH protection

		Time to develop a sunburn WITHOUT protection

For measuring the protective effect against UVA rays, one uses the Widely accepted Australian Standard. If a product fulfils this standard, it will filter more than 90% of UVA rays between the wave lengths of 320 and 360 nm, considered the most dangerous in the UVA range.

When exposed to sunlight, follow also the basic rules of behaviour:

		Avoid direct sun exposure between 11 am and 3 pm

		Wear a T-shirt, a hat and sunglasses

		About 60% of the UV rays reach the ground in cloudy weather – protect your skin in this case too.

		Glass does not block UVA rays – even when you travel you are exposed to UVA

		Sun dries out the skin – use hydrating lotions after sun exposure

		Do not use perfume or after shave before sun exposure – it increases risk of allergies.

LIPOSOMES

In sun protection, the goal is to concentrate the UV filters in the horny layer,
above the living epidermis and dermis, to minimize the damaging effect of the sun
on the skin.

Liposomes are ideal carriers of UV filters:

			They can target the active substance (UV filter) to a specific tissue
			They can provide a continuous action of an active ingredient.
			In addition they can hydrate and improve the elasticity of the horny layer.
